Over 5,500 employees of NYC DOT oversee one of the most complex urban transportation networks in the world. NYC DOT’s staff manage an annual operating budget of $1.1 billion and a ten-year $19.7 billion caption program, along with 6,300 miles of streets and highways, over 12,000 miles of sidewalk, and nearly 800 bridges and tunnels, including the iconic East River bridges. NYC DOT’s staff also installs and maintains over one million street signs, 13,250 signalized intersections, over 315,000 street lights, and over 350 million linear feet of markings.

It should be noted that certain properties within the jurisdiction of NYC DOT are managed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) with permission from NYC DOT. Management of these properties by NYC Parks is temporary and is expressly not intended to create public parks or parkland.

NYC DOT promotes the use of sustainable modes of transportation. NYC DOT designs bicycle facilities, bus lanes, and public plazas. NYC DOT operates the Staten Island Ferry, which served nearly 16 million people last year, and oversees ferry operations on City-owned piers. NYC DOT educates students and adults Citywide about street safety. NYC DOT’s staff issue parking permits to people with disabilities, not-for-profit agencies and governmental entities, and commercial vehicle permits for trucks; issue construction permits for work in City streets; and manage the City's Adopt-a-Highway program.

NYC DOT Bridges Design Build Soft Launch – March 4, 2021 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm
NYC DOT invites interested contractors, engineers, and related entities to participate in an “NYC DOT Bridges Design Build Soft Launch” to be held virtually on Thursday March 4, 2021 from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM ET. The feedback from this event will help inform the Department’s approach to developing a design build program that best combines industry best practices with the needs of the Agency to complete its bridge projects successfully.

With the passage of the New York City Public Works Investment Act in 2019, the Department began planning the launch of the Design Build program. During this planning phase NYC DOT has held several discussions with industry partners to gain valuable insights into aspects of successful design build projects as well as the concerns of the industry from previous experiences. The event will include an overview of NYC DOT’s current Design Build program approach for bridge projects, anticipated projects and general timeline. We hope this will provide the industry with information necessary to inform its resourcing and planning efforts moving forward. There will be a Q&A portion after the presentation is completed.

Zoom: http://bit.ly/3qVxsc8 (passcode 698097) is provided for participation to the event. However RSVP via email at ACCO@dot.nyc.gov is strongly recommended. Email should have Design Build soft launch in the subject line along with name, firm/organization affiliation, title, email and telephone contact information prior to the event.

Notice: NYC DOT to Hold E-Scooter Share Industry Day on Tuesday October 6

The New York City Department of Transportation invites interested e-scooter (electric scooter) share providers, companies that assist local governments in managing and overseeing micromobility providers, and related entities to participate in an “E-Scooter Share Industry Day” to be held virtually on Tuesday October 6, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET. The feedback from this event will help inform the Department’s approach to developing an e-scooter share pilot program, as required by Local Law 74 of 2020, during a period of significant fiscal challenges.

NYC DOT believes that to be safe, equitable, and sustainable, an e-scooter share pilot program in New York City needs to include robust participation and oversight by the Department. Given the current fiscal climate, NYC DOT is seeking to engage the e-scooter share industry in a conversation around the following topics:

  1. innovative partnership and funding models to support NYC DOT oversight of e-scooter share providers;
  2. the industry’s perspective on what a safe, equitable, and sustainable e-scooter pilot program would look like in New York City;
  3. innovative approaches and technologies to make e-scooter share systems more accessible to people with disabilities; and
  4. innovative approaches and technologies to improve e-scooter share safety, reduce sidewalk obstruction, and increase user compliance with operating rules.

In addition to e-scooter share providers, NYC DOT is seeking to engage companies that assist local governments in managing and overseeing micromobility providers and related entities to better understand the services they offer in the areas of micromobility data aggregation and analysis, automated oversight tools, and other support services. The Department is particularly interested in technologies or approaches that companies in this space have deployed to assist other cities in successfully overseeing micromobility providers.

To receive a formal invitation, interested parties should contact Gail Hatchett at NYC DOT’s office of the Agency Chief Contracting Officer (ACCO) at (646) 565-5131 or via email at ACCO@dot.nyc.gov.
